Thursday and Friday pass in a blur, and before I know it it’s Saturday morning. Evan will be here any minute to pick up Sadie. Even after three years being without him, my nerves still itch with anxiety knowing he’ll be here soon, that he’ll see the condition of the house, of Sadie, of me. I’ve at least managed to maintain the level of clean Jack helped to create on Wednesday—or technically, Thursday—but it’s still not Evan clean. It’ll have to do, since after breakfast with Sadie this morning, I have time for little else but a very quick shower, if that.
Sure enough, five minutes in, I hear footsteps through the rush of water, distinctly Evan’s, pounding up the stairs. A buzz of conversation between Evan’s deep voice and Sadie’s tiny one grows louder, and louder, and…he’s in my bedroom.
Shit.
I’ve tried telling Sadie why her daddy is no longer welcome in Mommy’s bedroom, why he shouldn’t even be going up the stairs in our house, it’s not his house, that he will be just fine waiting downstairs alone in the foyer until we’re ready to go down and greet him. Or waiting outside, for all I care. She’s bright, but with this particular topic, it’s hard getting through to a seven-year-old. Especially a self-proclaimed daddy’s girl like my Sadie. I’m glad she’s remained close to him, I really am, but at the same time, my heart cracks at the idea that one day she might experience a similar kind of pressure from him. Too much like this or that. Not enough like so-and-so.
I swear, if he ever compares my little girl—
I reel in my thoughts before they make my head explode. Focus on your breathing.
I turn off the water and wrap myself in a towel, peeking through the bathroom door. Evan is making my bed. Perfect. I’m sure he’ll be bringing that to my attention. “Please don’t do that,” I tell him.
“Someone has to,” he retorts without looking up.
“You know I choose to spend Saturdays with Sadie, not cleaning.”
“Two seconds, Cara. Takes two fucking seconds.”
“Language,” I hiss at him. Sadie’s still in here. I close the door and start getting dressed.
“Who’s Jack?” I hear suddenly, and my heart stills.
“Jack…who?” When I open the door, only halfway dressed and my hair still wet and tangled, I see Evan standing near my dresser. He quirks a brow at me, holding up a business card.
“You went through my fucking jewelry box?”
“Language, Cara.” His lip curls into a wry smirk, the one I used to melt over but now it makes my skin crawl, then he looks at the card again and regards it with a nod before setting it down on top of my dresser. “Ready, Sadie?”
Her face brightens. That girl thinks the world of her dad. I admit she’s not a great judge of character, not yet, but she’s only seven, and he is her dad. Someday she’ll learn she can’t trust everyone, that she’s not obligated to love anyone. I just hope and pray that lesson won’t come too hard for her.
